GENERAL:
The Boy Bedlam Review is interested in publishing the most stimulating,
insightful, and progressively minded works of art, literature, film, arts
criticism, political analysis, and cultural interpretation. We are looking
for the complex, the positive, and The New.
We solicit around the clock. There are no deadlines. BoyBedlamReview.com
publishes new content on a bi-weekly basis, although the official Issue
Number and Theme are unveiled on a monthly basis.
We largely solicit work from people in the Sub-Ether who show radical
promise. But we wholeheartedly desire spontaneous submissions as well
as pitches for stories and ideas to be fulfilled by the Author or Artist.
Submissions should be emailed to:
editor@boybedlamreview.com
We cannot accept snail mail at this time. Many inexpensive and free tools
are available to facilitate the online publication and exhibition of your
writing, art, and video, including YouTube.com,
Flickr.com, DeviantArt.com,
Blogger, and WordPress.
Due to the volume of material coming our way, and the limited amount of
time we have to evaluate it, we will only contact you if we are interested
in featuring your work. Our apologies. On the other hand, if we do contact
you, we probably will do so lickety-split. If you’ve waited a week
for a response, you are most likely not one of the fortunate.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Original Writing:
We ask two questions of any written work submitted for publication: is
it well-written, and is it insightful? Those are the criteria you should
use when preparing something for us.
We are members of a hyperactive, inattentive generation. Startle us. Stimulate
us. Intrigue us. It’s just like fast, hard, hot sex. Keep it pumping
until the multiple meanings start coming. And then pull out. We’ll
be grinning in afterglow.
Keep it short, unless you can do the Tantric thing with your Organ. Hey,
arouse us and see. But we’re a bloggy generation. A single-serving
generation. We like things in tight packages. Blog-sized bits are tasty.
For additional clues, read our categories and our stories to get an idea
of where we’re coming from. But remember, too: it might not be where
we’re going next. Read our FAQ. Read our manifesto.
Original Art, Photography, and Video:
For original art and photography, please see The
Boy Bedlam Review Flickr group. We also feature superb short films.
Please send an email to editor@boybedlamreview.com
with a link to your YouTube.
Works of Criticism and Interpretation:
We need bold writers who are able to tell us what’s great in culture
and the arts, and why. Not just good: great.
We want you to test us. Send us a bit of that music, art, film, writing,
doodad or whatnot. If we think it’s great too, we’ll publish
you. If we’re equivocal about that bit of music, art, film, writing,
doodad or whatnot, we’ll be depending upon you to convince us of
its greatness. And if you can convince us, we’ll publish you.
Our ideal critics are just as clever and insightful as our favorite college
professors, but a hell of a lot more fun. They’ll talk about context
as much as text. They’ll recognize the art’s or artist’s
influences – and the art’s or artist’s independence
from those influences. Our ideal critics will consider the aspects of
the age in which the art was produced. And think around and through.
We have capacity. Need a video clip to make your point? We can host
it. Is there a part in a piece of music that just blows your mind? We’ll
stream a bit, and let you describe why it works. We’ll mingle it
with your text to bring your meaning across.
We are interested in the cutting edge, up-to-the minute, and stuff that’s
ten years ahead of its time; but we’re also interested in perceptive
perspectives on art, literature, film, television, and music of the past
– as recently past as six months, and and as archaic as civilization
– as long as your analysis says something new that rings true for
our lives and this world today.
If you have an idea, pitch it. We’ll let you know whether it’s
something good for The Boy Bedlam Review.
A Word on Politics:
Politics is everywhere these days, from the hallowed halls of academe
to the formerly hallowed halls of the Justice Department. Websites such
as FireDogLake, Talking Points Memo, Daily Kos, Alternet, the American
Prospect, and The Nation do an exemplary job of political reporting and
analysis. Straight writings about contemporary local, national, and world
politics will not normally be accepted by The Boy Bedlam Review.
However we most heartily welcome and encourage submissions of meta-political
analysis: creative, interdisciplinary analyses of politics in terms of
literature, economics, critical theory, art history and theory, biology,
anthropology, psychology, group dynamics, and other disciplines. Once
again, if you have an idea, pitch it to us, and we’ll consider whether
it’s appropriate for The Boy Bedlam Review.
PAYMENT:
As stated in our Ferro-Aqueous Quarries, The Boy Bedlam Review is
funded solely by two generous patrons of Society and the Arts who have
granted moneys toward basic operations. The Collaborators of The Boy
Bedlam Review, being artists, writers, photographers, and film-makers
themselves, will make every best-faith effort possible to compensate for
the time, effort, and considerable thought that goes into any excellent
work of human creativity – whether that be a small monetary payment,
a bottle of Jack Daniels (or whatever gets you through the night), a barter
of goods or services, or a good personal contact. Payments are negotiated
on an ad-hoc basis. We do guarantee links and cross-promotion
with a website you designate.
COPYRIGHT:
The Boy Bedlam Review reserves the right to reprint or republish
any accepted Work ONCE in a physical print form. As The Boy Bedlam
Review is primarily an online publication, this physical manifestation
will most likely consist of small, high-quality, limited-edition commemorative
printings sold on a bi-annual basis to raise funds for the continuing
operation of The Boy Bedlam Review, and/or a CD or DVD of audio
or video work. All other copyrights are retained by the Author or Artist
with this stipulation – that if a Work is republished, in another
Publication, Anthology, or Compilation (excepting aggregation websites
such as YouTube or MySpace), or Obtained by a Publisher or a Producer,
credit must be given to The Boy Bedlam Review, i.e. “As seen in”
or “First displayed/published in The Boy Bedlam Review (http://www.boybedlamreview.com),
Issue X, 20XX.”
This copyright notice is subject to change, but all copyright agreements
at the time of a Work’s publication will be honored in perpetuity.
